Blog Post 9/16/15:  the Harry Potter version.

Jane (and Family) Update:
The kids had an unusual four-day school break this week (even though school just started), so we took advantage of low fares and headed to Orlando, Florida to visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter!  All three kids—and I, of course—are Harry Potter crazy, and we’d never been to Florida together, so it seemed like a perfect occasion to travel there.

The excitement started as we were getting off the plane in Florida and the PILOT RECOGNIZED JANE!! His daughter goes to Jane's school! He let us see the cockpit!

Once at Universal Orlando we had the time of our lives.  We explored the shops in Diagon Alley and Knockturn Alley, entered Gringott’s Bank, rode the Hogwarts Express, and visited Hogsmeade and Hogwarts castle.

Wands at the ready

Randomly bumped into my cousin, Anne, in Olivander's wand shop!

If you are not Harry Potter crazy, you may choose to skip this next story:

Several times we attended a small performance at Olivander’s in which one of the “Wand-Keepers” re-enacted the scene in the shop when Harry purchased his first wand, except a child from the audience was selected to participate in Harry’s place.  During one of the shows BOTH Alec and Jane were selected to have a wand “choose” them.

Alec went first.  The Wand-Keeper (a witch, by the way) gave him a wand—willow, with a dragon heartstring core—and asked him to levitate some wand boxes.  However, when Alec commanded, “Wingardium Leviosa!” a stack of boxes fell from the shelf!  Then Jane was given a wand to try—holly, with a dragon heartstring core—and she was asked to lighten the room.  When Jane shouted, “Lumos!” she started a lightning storm!  The Wand-Keeper then had an inspiration (“I wonder…”), and switched the wands.  Both wands shone and a magic wind blew, and we knew then they had been given the right wands...

The wand keeper went on to say that having been chosen by a holly wand indicated that Alec would make a good leader, and that a willow wand indicated that Jane would be valued for her friendship and cooperation.  Finally, she announced the fact that the dragon heartstring in each of their wands came from the same dragon meant that they would always be loyal to each other.

Of course, I ate it all up :)

NF Update:
We Braved the Escape from Gringott's ride one morning. The porter at the entrance appeared to have a classic trigeminal plexiform neurofibroma, so I stopped to talk to her. I told her my daughter has NF, and she said that she did, too! She said hello to Jane, and then she let us go to the front of the line :)

Yes, I ran while we were in Florida.  I didn’t want to get behind by too many miles, since the Hartford Marathon is less than a month away.  Plus I had to burn off some of that Pumpkin Juice and Butterbeer!  We had downtime each afternoon after spending the morning in the park, so the kids cooled off in the pool while I ran.  I was afraid to run on the city streets (I found the presence of sidewalks inconsistent) and jogging isn’t allowed in the park, so I limited myself to a three mile loop around the hotel complex.  It was quite lovely, through gardens and along a man-made river, and with little, tiny lizards scattering from my path as I ran—I don’t see that in Connecticut.

Done with the New Haven Road Race, my first race of the season, and it was a great one!  I ran my best 20K time since 2011!  I had lots of support today:  not only Todd and the kids, but my Mom, Aunt Anne, and sister Anne came out to cheer, too.  Thanks to them all, and thank you to the wonderful city of New Haven!

I'm a bit behind in my quest to run 1000 miles again this year.  I should be nearing 700 by now, but I'm only at 647.  Still hoping to squeak by.
Just over a week until my first race of the season--the 20K New Haven Road Race.  If you haven't donated already, please do!  Here is the link:  www.krath4jane.com

NF Update:
Took the kids into Todd's lab yesterday for another MRI practice session for Jane.  For those who didn't know, we have been trying to train Jane to lie still for a non-sedated MRI scan.  On our current regimen, Jane needs a scan of her tumor every 6 months.   Jane is scheduled for her 18th MRI this December, and we’re hoping she won’t need anesthesia for this one.  We started practicing in February of this year.  At that time Jane would only stay in the scanner for a few seconds.  Yesterday she stayed in for 30 MINUTES!  We are so proud of her!  She didn’t even listen to music or watch a movie—she just listened to the sounds of the machine.

Jane (and her siblings) Update:
The kids started back to school today!  Everyone seems excited about their teachers and classes.  I think it's going to be a good school year :)

Building up for my fall races.   I got lots of running done this month while we were on vacation in Canada—and I didn’t meet a single bear.

Jane (and family) Update:
We spent a wonderful two weeks visiting with our Canadian family and friends and enjoying the beautiful Lake of the Woods in Northern Ontario.  Heaven!

Alec has become quite a wakeboarder!

Jane prefers a more sedate ride.  Here she is with our neighbors.

NF Update:
Now that we’re back at home Jane is due for another check-up and blood draw.  Recently a friend asked me for advice on how to make it easier for her son to have his blood drawn.  I passed the question on to Jane, and below is her answer.  Key points:  numbing cream, hold your mom’s hand, and don’t look at the needle :)

(Jane didn’t want me to take a video, so it’s just a short audio.)

I started training for the Hartford Marathon again this month.  To make it official, here’s my training plan:

Of course, our fund-raising campaign is ongoing.  Donate here:  www.krath4jane.com!

This time around I’ve already learned two new lessons about training—things I should have known better about:
     1.   Training for two half-marathons in a season does not equal training for one full marathon.  Even though I’ve been running all year, I’m out of shape for the weekly long runs.  Working on it.
     2.  In the middle of summer, it is not OK to start a long run at 11am, even if it is when everyone else has been served their morning meal and supplemental child care is available.  This is fine any other time of year, but I’m too old to run anything over 10 miles in the 90 degree heat of July.  I’ve got to reconfigure my Sunday mornings.  (Next weekend, you’re on your own for breakfast, kiddos!)

Jane and Family Update, summer to date:
We’ve had an enjoyable month since school let out.  We spent the last week in June in Cape Cod decompressing from the school year.  It was nice and quiet!  We slept in, rode our bikes everywhere, swam, played on the beach, and had good weather.

Poor Todd!  He's never in any of the pictures because he's always the one with the camera!

National Seashore

We got back the 4th of July weekend and were invited to spend the holiday itself with family friends in another part of Connecticut.  They have a daughter Helen's age, a son Alec's age, and a son Jane's age--all get along swimmingly :)  We were even able to go sailing on their boat!  What a wonderful time.

For the month of July the kids are attending day camp in a nearby town, and I am glad to say they are all having a blast (as they usually do).  Instead of the minimal responses to "How was your day?" that we get during the school year, every night at dinner they all chat animatedly about the day's events at camp.  It is nice to see.  (They also sleep soundly--all that fresh air tires them out!)

Helen's camp team, which was awarded the White Feather for good citizenship.  Incidentally, Helen is now a teenager!  She turned 13 earlier this month, and will soon be taller than me :)

In other news, after 6 long months Alec finally consented to a haircut!  He wasn’t particularly happy about it, but I’m certainly relieved.
