Hooray for the NYC Half Marathon!  Another race done for the Children’s Tumor Foundation today, and it was brilliant.  The NYC Half itself is amazing—big, spirited crowds and great fun to be able to run through Central Park, Times Square, and by the World Trade Center—but I also ran a personal best this morning!  I beat last year’s NYC Half time by 5 minutes, and beat my previous half marathon PR by almost a minute.  I sacrificed a toenail to the cause, but it was worth it ;)

At the Expo yesterday with Neil, my dear friend, running partner, and CTF fund-raiser, too!

NF Update:
We’ve had a great first week of fund raising—we have so many generous supporters!  In just one week we’ve raised $5,881!  Thank you to everyone who has donated.  Our goal for this year:  $17,500 for NF Northeast and the Children’s Tumor Foundation.  If you haven’t given this year, please do!  Here’s the link to our site:

Jane Update:
Now that the NYC Half is over I’ll turn my attention to our next task:  in four days Jane and I return to NIH for her check-up and blood work.  I planned ahead for this trip—the day after Jane’s appointments we’ve got reservations to tour the White House!  We can’t wait!

Two weeks until the New York Half, six weeks until the Boston Marathon!

Each spring John Hancock, the principle sponsor of the Boston Marathon, hangs hundreds of Boston Marathon street banners throughout the city to showcase excitement for the race. Images include elite athletes, spectators, qualified and non-profit runners, and race officials.

This year for the first time, John Hancock is providing anyone with the chance to appear on one of 26 banners that will hang on Boylston Street, leading up to the iconic finish line.  On its website you can create a personalized image of yourself on a digital banner featuring one of the following words: gratitude, passion, pride, dedication, inspired, drive, psyched, believe, heart, strength, glory and spirit. Among the entries, 26 will be made into street banners that will line the final stretch of the race on Patriots' Day.

Here is the banner I created!  I think it’s worthy of being displayed on Boylston Street :)

You can see all of the entries at www.jhextramile.com/runbold/submissionsgallery.

NF Update:
It’s time to donate!

Usually we wait until after NF Awareness Month in May each year, but this year because of the Boston Marathon in April we’re starting our fundraising campaign a little early!  If you are able,
We’ll be raising funds for both NF Northeast and the Children’s Tumor Foundation this year.  Please help us make a big splash before Boston!

Jane Update:
March 2nd was Read Across America Day in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday.  To celebrate it, Jane’s school has lots of special activities, including a guest who read to her class—Senator Ted Kennedy, Jr!  Senator Kennedy is our recently-elected state senator, son of Senator Edward Kennedy, and nephew of President John F Kennedy and Senator Robert F Kennedy.  He also lost his right leg to osteosarcoma when he was just 12 years old.  I hadn’t known he was going to be visiting Jane’s school, but learned it in this email from Jane’s 3rd grade teacher:

Today we had Ted Kennedy, Jr. come to the class as a guest reader in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday.  Jane answered many questions with a positive and lively attitude.  At the end, the children were getting autographs.  Senator Kennedy told Jane that he enjoyed the spark she possessed during his visit.  I was very proud of her and complimented her!

We asked Jane about Sen Kennedy’s visit that evening, and she excitedly ran to her backpack and produced these autographs:
The bottom autograph reads, "To Helen and Alec, You have a nice sister."
Apparently Jane had asked the senator for an extra autograph for her brother and sister <3

I wrote to Sen Kennedy thanking him for his kindness towards Jane…

Dear Senator Kennedy,
Thank you for reading at Jeffrey School in Madison on Dr Seuss Day! My daughter, Jane, was thrilled to have you.
I was tickled to get an email from Jane's teacher letting me know that you enjoyed her "spark". This word describes her well! Jane has neurofibromatosis and has been on various experimental chemotherapies through the NIH since she was 3 years old. As you could see, it hasn't held her back at all, and we all anticipate great things from her!
Thank you again for your attention to her, and thank you for your work on behalf of the 12th district.
Sincerely,
Kristina Rath

 …and he wrote a lovely note back:
Hello Kristina,
Thank you for your email. I had a great time reading to the kids and speaking with them yesterday. It sounds as if Jane is a very strong young woman and will meet any type of challenge she comes across in her life. Again, thank you for the note.
Sincerely,
Ted
Our family agreed that maybe someday Jane will be the head of the National Institutes of Health under a President Kennedy :)
~~~
Finally, the tooth fairy will be coming to our house again tonight!  It seemed like Jane’s top front tooth was going to hang on forever, but it finally came loose today (with a helpful nudge from a friend!)
I’m a little slow and low on mileage so far this month due to winter weather and a wretched virus, but I’m still plodding along.  Five weeks until the NYC Half, and nine weeks until the Boston Marathon—yikes!
Despite the cold this weekend, I got my long run in, and I beat my previous miles-over-degrees record by running 14 miles in 0 degrees F yesterday!  (The last time I recorded running more miles than degrees was February 13th last year, when I ran 7.6 miles in 7 degrees.)
In case you were wondering, this is what I wear to run in sub-zero temperatures:
-Two pairs of running tights (note: not enough yesterday)
-Long sleeve racing shirt, long sleeve hooded fleece running shirt, fleece vest, and a fluorescent-yellow windbreaker
-Hat, gaiter, silk glove liners, and snowboarding gloves
-Running socks and plastic sandwich bags over my toes (hat tip to Runner’s World editor, Mark Remy)
-Vaseline over any remaining exposed face
The above, of course, is all on top of my undergarments, which is more than I can say for my many NF-fighting friends who participated in Cupid’s Undie Run (www.cupidsundierun.com) this weekend!  It is a “mile-ish” run in one’s underwear that takes place in cities all over the US, Canada, and Australia for Valentine’s Day.  Brrr!  The great thing is that all the proceeds go to the Children’s Tumor Foundation.  This event alone has raised millions of dollars for CTF in the past few years!
On another note, I stopped running with headphones about a year ago (I think I’m faster without them) so I haven’t updated my running playlist in a while.  However, I’ve had a few running-related songs rolling around in my head during my training the past few months, so I’d thought I’d share them.  (You can see some old selections from my playlist herehere, and here.)
Ra Ra Riot “Water”
Key Lyrics:  “My face was numb, my lungs were sore, but still I [ran] until my feet could touch the [finish]” (particularly appropriate given yesterday’s frozen run)
The Struts “Could Have Been Me”
Key Lyrics:  “Wrrrapped in your regret, what a waste of blood and sweat.  Oh!  I wanna taste love and pain.  I wanna feel pride and shame.  I don’t wanna take my time, don't wanna waste one line.  I wanna live better days, never look back and say, ‘Could have been me.’”
Cold War Kids “First”
Key Lyrics:  “…you were there first” (OK, this song isn’t really about running, but it’s a good mantra for focusing on the end of a race.  Plus the tempo is the perfect pace for a long run.)
Jane Update:
February has started off with two extra-long weekends thanks to a couple of snow storms and the President’s Day holiday.  The first weekend we were treated with a visit from my Aunt Anne.  Every year, as a birthday gift to me, my aunt and my mother get together at my mother’s house and invite my kids for sleep over.  This is not just any sleepover—they make up a “hotel” complete with check-in, itinerary, and meal menus!  Todd and I had a rare dinner out together and even caught a movie in the theater :)
These itineraries was posted on the wall as the kids entered Grandma's house.  The hostesses go all out!
Today the kids and I drove up to Providence, RI to visit the Roger Williams Zoo.  Visit a zoo in February, you ask?  Yes—and we had a blast!  The zoo has lots of indoor exhibits, and I was surprised how many animals were actually still outside.
Zookeeper feeding carrots to one of the elephants
Jane with one of the three elephants (not sure if this one was Kate, Diana, or Ginny)
The peacocks weren't shy of Helen (nor she of them)
Helen humored me and actually posed for a picture!
NF Update:
I am honored to say that I was recently awarded the first annual Garrett Baumann Heart of a Champion Award from the NF Endurance Team!
Garrett Baumann is a young man from San Diego who was diagnosed with NF2 when he was 11 years old.  Neurofibromatosis, type 2 (NF2), is very similar to the NF1 that Jane has.  Like NF1, NF2 causes tumors to grown on nerves throughout the body.  However, in addition, the auditory nerve is almost is always involved with tumor in NF2, leading to hearing loss.
Garrett has numerous tumors in his brain, up and down his spinal cord, in his arms, hands, and other parts of his body.  As a result of NF2 he has undergone countless surgeries, radiation, and chemotherapy, has lost his hearing and voice, and is in constant pain.  In the past few years he has been, in fact, fighting for his life.
Since Garrett was diagnosed, the Baumann family has relied on family and friends for support.  That is why they formed Team Garrett (http://teamgarrett.org/), a group of people who walk and run for Garrett in various races, from 5Ks to marathons, locally in California and even all over the country, to raise money for the Children's Tumor Foundation.  One of the most incredible things about Team Garrett is that it not only consists of his immediate family but also members of the Baumann’s church, neighbors, friends, and even strangers who joined the mix when they learned about Garrett.  The team is over 100 strong and this will be their 4th consecutive year running for him and raising funds for CTF.
To read more about the award, see the announcement here (http://www.ctf.org/item/nf-endurance-inaugural-heart-of-a-champion.html)  I am humbled to have been chosen to win the first award that bears Garrett’s name <3
After a week and a half off from running and some overindulgence on my mother-in-law’s delectable baking over the holidays, I’m a little slower than usual, but I’m back in training.  I’ve got my race schedule planned for the year, and am thrilled to say that it includes the Boston Marathon again!  I am honored to be running for Neurofibromatosis Northeast, (www.NFIncNE.org), group serving New York and New England that is dedicated to finding a treatment and cure for NF by promoting scientific research, creating awareness, and supporting those affected by NF.  Readers of this blog may recall that I discovered this wonderful organization during the 2014 Boston Marathon when I almost gave up at mile 17 (you can read about it here).
According to Rule 1.26 of The Runner’s Rule Book by Mark Remy, training plans must be printed and posted on the fridge, so here’s my plan for Boston:
Here also is the year’s race schedule:
NYC Half Marathon—Sunday, March 20th
Boston Marathon—Monday, April 18th
New Haven Road Race Half Marathon—Monday, September 5th
Hartford Marathon—Saturday, October 8th (this will be my tenth marathon!)
If you’d like to make an early donation to our 2016 campaign you can do so here (www.krath4jane.com)!
In other exciting running news this week (which perhaps also belongs under the NF Update), my secret, nerdy ambition has been realized:  Jane and I were featured in the blog of the Hogwarts Running Club!  The HRC (www.HogwartsRunningClub.org) is a relatively new charitable organization that organizes virtual running events inspired by the Harry Potter wizarding world.  It is designed to promote exercise while raising money for deserving charities in order to accomplish their mission of “changing the Muggle world one mile at a time”.  In its first two years, Hogwarts Running Club has raised over $420,000 for deserving charities, benefitting the lives of veterans, animals, literacy campaigns, and children battling illness.  I was so pleased with how the post turned out!  You can read it here.  You’ll enjoy it even if you don’t love Harry Potter :)
NF Update:
Last month I wrote about our participation in the Haddam Killingworth High School Annual Holiday Telethon, this year benefitting the Children’s Tumor Foundation.  For those of you who couldn’t see the show when it aired, here is the link to Jane’s segment (about 10 minutes long, but worth the time to watch her sparkly personality!)  To remind you, this well-done piece was created by two high school students!  All in all the telethon raised $18,828.42 between the original broadcast and the re-airings the following week.  It takes me a whole year to raise that much!  We were so grateful for the opportunity to work with this talented group.
Jane Update:
Finally, some pictures from our holiday trip to Winnipeg.  The snow and cold may not seem as impressive now that the eastern US is in the middle of the season’s first blizzard, but keep in mind these were taken while it was 60 degrees in Connecticut :)
