This past Sunday (St Patrick’s Day!) I ran the NYC Half as part of the Children’s Tumor Foundation.  It was my fifth NYC Half and the race never gets old.  It’s so much fun to run through the streets of Manhattan, through Times Square and Central Park, and experience the energy of New York City and of New Yorkers themselves.

This year for the first time Todd and the kids couldn’t join me because of other activities, so I spent the weekend with my running partner, Neil, and his wife, Marcia.  While we missed having the rest of my family there, I had a lovely time catching up with Neil and Marcia, and I’ll confess it was nice not having to worry about anyone else’s needs :)

It's always fun to find your name on the wall of participants

The course changes somewhat every year, some years beginning in Central Park and some years finishing there.  This year the race started in Brooklyn and wound its way through Prospect Park, over Manhattan Bridge, up FDR Drive on the east side of Manhattan, across 42nd Street to Times Square, then finished in Central Park.  The problem with starting all the way out in Brooklyn is that we had to wake up that much earlier to make it out there in time!

Obligatory pre-race gear photo

My collection of alarms from previous races.
This one had the earliest wake-up time!

It was chilly but bright and sunny—ideal conditions.  We dress in lots of layers while waiting for the race to get under way (which can be several hours) then shed them before we start to run.  The New York Road Runners and many other race organizations collect the discarded clothing and donate it to charity.

At the finish!

After a warm shower and change of clothes,
I met up with the head of the NF Endurance Team, the indefatigable Angela!

The medal

I didn’t set any PRs this weekend, but it was a great way to start the racing season.  My next event is the Vermont City Marathon at the end of May, so I’ll get right back to training this week.  We made a good start to our 2019 fund raising campaign, too.  We’re already about a quarter of the way to our goal of $15,000 for the year!  Thank you to everyone who has already donated.  As always, you can donate our Children’s Tumor Foundation campaign at www.KRath4Jane.com
